The UK Foreign Office has added an additional eleven further countries to its public alert register regarding the dangers of toxic alcohol toxicity from adulterated beverages.

The updated advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "an international surge in the incidence of documented incidents" of methanol contamination.

Just a few weeks ago, the government had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after multiple notable cases like the fatal demise of six travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can lead to blindness or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for human consumption.

While it is naturally produced during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the distillation process.

However in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Official Recommendations for Travellers

Authorities official the minister said that all travellers should recognize the signs of methanol poisoning.

"If you're consuming alcohol overseas, stick to well-known venues and refrain from local brews or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.

"If something seems unusual, like a fatigue that's much more severe than typical or sight issues – get medical help immediately."

The full list of destinations listed as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
