Van Hecke Secures Point for Brighton Following Bart Verbruggen's Own Goal Against Wolverhampton Wanderers

The Norwegian striker, after being a major transfer fall through late in the window, appeared frustratedly arguing with his team's coaching staff at full-time. This came following his late substitution, shortly post he hit the post with Wolves ahead thanks to the Brighton goalkeeper's unfortunate deflection. The Seagulls pushed for a last-gasp leveler, which came through Jan Paul van Hecke.

Wolves Frustrated Again by Last-Minute Strike

This marks the second successive match, Wolves' bid to get their season underway was stymied by a late equaliser. Vítor Pereira had been dismissed just before the top flight's bottom side went ahead, after a Munetsi volley rebounded from the crossbar and in off the Brighton goalkeeper.

Fabian Hürzeler's side earned a point for their second-half dominance, but Wolves, for the second game in a row following their tie at Spurs, appeared as if they would manage to hold out for a first league win of the campaign before conceding a late leveler.

Match Turns with Incidents

The striker looked Wolves' most likely source for a crucial additional goal, and the hosts seemed less able to break forward with Arias leading the line. The match burst into life in the heart of the opening period.

The Wolves boss was furious at Jarred Gillett's call not to award a set-piece when Gomes was jostled by Baleba in the middle in the Brighton half. Then, following the referee cautioned Baleba for an altogether more obvious infraction on Hugo Bueno, the dismissal was shown to the coach for striking a spare ball from a marker at the referee's technical area. Even though he promptly said sorry, it was evidently a reckless act. The fire had been lit.

After a long set-piece into the visitors' area was nodded back into the danger area, Welbeck only managed to clear the ball away as far as Munetsi, on the right side of the penalty spot, who dispatched a veritable powerful of a shot toward goal. Although the keeper managed to deflect the ball onto the bottom of the bar, it bounced down and across the goal-line after hitting the shot-stopper's hand.

One almost became two, only for Verbruggen to calmly push Ladislav Krejci's headed effort, from a further high angled set-piece, to safety. The visitors, with their very strong record at Molineux – they had taken victory in their previous four previous games – and a positive beginning to the campaign as well, counterattacked with sporadic threat.

Second Half Drama

When Jackson Tchatatchoua underpowered a back-pass, Gruda was entitled to challenge Johnstone for the ball, though he made contact with the Wolves goalkeeper with his challenge. After a niggly spell, the significance of the subsequent goal became increasingly apparent. It almost went Wolves' favor, early in the second period, only for Arias to place over the bar from close range after a superb break led by Strand Larsen, after he enabled Hwang Hee-chan to invite the overlapping Bueno to deliver into the box.

The away side, somewhat undercooked in the first half, looked more potent for the introduction of Rutter and, from Minteh's left-wing delivery, the replacement could barely have caught his half-volley any more perfectly.

The Wolves keeper, however, justifying his retention in the starting lineup over José Sá, dived back to his side to deny him. Hürzeler had already asked Yasin Ayari to patrol the back of his engine room on his own, leading Brighton to more possession control, when he introduced the striker Stefanos Tzimas to partner Welbeck in attack, with Diego Gómez just behind them.

Final Drama as Van Hecke Strikes

The Seagulls have notched more times against Wolves than against every other team in the top division. But Wolves were determined to hang on to what they held and so came close to putting the game away when Larsen shot against the foot of the post. The Norway striker, still seeking peak condition after an Achilles injury, did not look impressed when he was withdrawn minutes later as the assistant, the manager's number two, looked to shore up the victory. The move backfired however as Brighton equalised with four minutes remaining.

Wolves believed the ball had already gone behind for a goal kick when Tchatatchoua made sure by touching it on. From Minteh's short corner, De Cuyper crossed and, after the substitute got a small touch, Van Hecke thudded home only his second ever goal in seventy-seven league games for the club.
